Juma's Name:
Juma is short for Jumana which is Arabic for
'Silver Pearl'. She was so named because when she was born and until about 2 to
3 months old her coat was silver. Juma as a name in its own right is also Arabic
and means 'Friday'. We like to think of Juma as a 'Cat Friday' - she would
make a wonderful feline companion for any Robinson Crusoe. Juma also gets called
Jumi when we want to make a big fuss of her. Apparently, cats respond favourably
to the 'i'or 'ee' sound at the end of words. Can any one enlighten me further on
that?
Juma's Leopard Looks:
Juma, like Minbu, has beautiful fairly large nocturnal type eyes of yellow/ amber. Juma also has a
very sleek slender body and a face shape not too dissimilar to her Asian Leopard
ancestor.
Juma's Personality:
Juma has a bird-like voice, possibly like the
Egyptian Mau - she also bares some resemblance to this breed of cat (i.e. Mau).
Juma will reply in her soft voice when spoken to and will also often roll when
spoken to. Like Minbu, she loves the outdoors and is often found scaling a
Silver Birch tree in front of her house. Like all Bengals she is very much
attracted to the sound of running water and is often found in the bathroom
if the bath is running and loves to drink from the sink if the tap is running.
Not only that but she will jump up from sleep to the sound of water swishing in
a mop bucket.
Juma's Particularly Querky Traits:
Like Minbu she also never drinks water without testing it with her paw first. Juma generally paws her drinking water with her left paw so at first sight it looks like she is left pawed. However, she usually uses her right paw first in play so there is an element of ambidexterity in there - like her owner! She has a penchant for long hair - she
will very happily tread long hair as a prelude to sleep.
Juma collects lumps of moss and deposits it outside
the back door just below the cat flap. She also likes to bring other small items
to her collection. She once brought an old watch. Juma definitely has a
puppy-like personality about her in this regard.
Juma likes to jump onto the top of the sitting room
door and sit there.
Juma's Favourite Toys:
Juma is very playful and still plays like a kitten. Her favourite toys are items like small rubber toys, particularly the
plastic suction darts pictured here. She likes to push these under the
settee, which can be frustrating because we then have to get them all out for
her again.
Juma's Sleeping Habits
Juma sleeps anywhere but loves to sneak under bed covers. Because she is slender with little body fat she probably feels the cold more than her sister. Juma doesn't seem to need as much sleep as many other cats, including Minbu.
